The majority of Spanish majors who study abroad choose to go to Spain, and that's great! However there are tons of Spanish-speaking countries right here in this hemisphere. Latin America is extremely diverse, and each country's culture has been influenced by European countries like Spain, as well as indigenous and African cultures.
If you are majoring in Spanish because you want to be able to communicate with Spanish-speakers in the U.S., Latin American countries are a good choice for study abroad. The majority of Spanish-speakers you will encounter in the U.S. are from Latin America!
So when you are planning your semester abroad, don't forget about countries like:
Argentina
Bolivia
Brazil (if you're majoring in Portuguese)
Cuba
Chile
Colombia
Costa Rica
Dominican Republic
Ecuador
El Salvador
Guatemala
Honduras
Mexico
Nicaragua
Panama
Paraguay
Uruguay
Venezuela
Or even a domestic exchange in Puerto Rico!
